Military Focus

Augustus, the first leader of the Roman empire dedicated his forum to the Roman god of war (Mars) (Rome: Echoes of Imperial 49). A forum is the center for the Roman empire. This goes with the Mahabirian value of stability because the Roman empire was protected, which means that the economy is able to grow without foreign hindrances, allowing the empire to remain stable (Mars 49). His military successes and conquest of surrounding areas assured historians that the Roman Empire under Augustus' rule was the most powerful empire of the ancient world (Fife).

Julius Caesar, an important figure in the fall of the Roman republic, had numerous military successes in the duration of his reign. He conquered Gaul, which posed a threat to his people, and other surrounding areas as well as Northern Italy. He took advantage of momentary lapses in strength for Gaul and conquered the Belgi and Venetic tribes of Gaul. Caesar's political power over the surrounding areas mitigated the threat of surrounding empires, but it also created a lot of conflicting viewpoints on Caesar himself, causing civil unrest in his empire which eventually led to a civil war between the forces of Caesar and Pompey (Encyclopedia of World Biography).

Caligula was an assertive dictator that strived to control every aspect of a person. He allowed little freedom for all of his subjects. His attempts of conquest on surrounding areas were laughable and failed miserably, despite his powerful army. His military resources were shaky and his decision making in times of military tension were very shaky and inefficient. He was the worst Roman conqueror (History.com)
