During the rule of Numa Pompilius, women seemed to be treated with some respect. Numa Pompilius founded the temple of Vesta, the godess of hearth (Lyttelton and Forman 26). Hearth was very important in that time because fertile land was very that important to agriculture and agriculture was very common. Because the Romans dedicated such an important part of their lives to a female godess, this shows that the Romans valued women. The Vestal Virgins were virgins elected in childhood who would rekindle the eternal flame in the temple of Vesta every year (Lyttelton and Forman 26). These Vestal Virgins were also well respected in the empire.
Caligula was a very ineffective ruler with respect to gender relations and social conduct in general. His rule consisted of many political and military failures. As a result, jobs for men as soldiers became risky and the effectiveness of the economy decreased under Caligula and his crappy economic decisions. The only constant jobs that remained were the jobs for women as housewives. Caligula could not maintain a stable economy within his crumbling empire, and many jobs were endangered. The employment of the common citizen was limited to simplistic jobs that had little pays (History.com).
Under Julius Caesar, men were given the privileged jobs in the military, as political delegates, and as business-people. Women were usually given jobs in and around the house as well as small business opportunites. Overall, society and economy were relatively stable with little fluctuation. That is, until the fall of the republic following Caesar's assassination (Encyclopedia of World Biography).
